Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Infection
(FIV infection; Feline AIDS)

This is a disease that affects cats only. Free-roaming cats are more likely to become infected. Infection occurs through scratches and bites.

The virus affects the immune system of the animal, making it vulnerable to infection by other microbes; thus FIV-infected cats may have chronic or recurrent infections of the eye, respiratory system or gastrointestinal system. Some cats may develop cancer.

This disease is not curable; infected cats will eventually die of debilitating infections or cancer. Prevention is the key against this disease. New cats entering a household should be tested to prevent introduction of the virus. Cats should be sterilized (neuter, spay) to reduce their instinct for free‑roaming. Outdoor, free-roaming cats should be vaccinated annually.
