Leptospirosis
This is a disease caused by the bacterium Leptospira. Dogs, humans and other mammals are susceptible to leptospira infection. Wildlife mammals
may carry the bacteria, shed it in the urine and contaminate waters. Unvaccinated dogs may then contract the disease by drinking urine-contaminated water.
Infected dogs, in turn, may pass the bacteria on to humans and other dogs.
Signs of leptospirosis are those of an acute disease of the kidneys. The sick animal has a fever, is dehydrated and lethargic. Some may experience vomiting
and diarrhea. This is a very serious disease that can affect humans. Affected dogs need to be hospitalized in isolation. Treatment is usually effective. All
dogs that are allowed to roam freely in areas with wildlife activity should be vaccinated yearly against leptospira.
