Rabies (Hydrophobia, Rage)

Rabies is a fatal, virally caused disease. All warm blooded animals, including, humans are susceptible. In North America, rabies is spread by wildlife animals.

The virus causes swelling of the brain, and progresses from behavioural changes (aggression, phobias) to paralysis, convulsions, and finally death. Animals affected with rabies must be isolated and euthanized.

Rabies is a public health issue because it affects humans. Rabies vaccination is not mandatory but it is highly recommended. Proof of rabies vaccination is required if your pet is to cross international borders.
